Theodore E. Scardefield II, 80, of Marie Drive passed away the morning of Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at Jameson Hospital. Born in Johnstown, Pa., on May 8, 1931, Theodore was the son of Theodore Edward Sr. and Helen DeMarris Sanner Scardefield. He married the former Rose Marie Cast on Sept. 1, 1956. She survives. He was a member of St. Vitus Church.

He attended the Milton Hershey School in Hershey, Pa., and the Medicine and Urological Technical Training Center at the University of California, Berkley. Theodore was a Navy veteran, serving from 1951 to 1955. He worked on the USS Haven medical ship and served with a special medical task force. During the Korean War, he was stationed in Vietnam and Indochina.

In 1962 he earned a bachelor of science degree from Youngstown State University. Theodore retired in 1995 as a certified benefits administrator for the Tri-State United Food Commercial Workers and the employees benefit fund, the Taft Hartley Trust. He was a former president of the Lawrence County AFL-CIO for over 30 years and AFL-CIO liaison on national and state levels. Theodore was owner and operator of Scardefield and Associates. He also owned and operated Gloria Jean’s Coffee House in Boardman, Ohio. He was an insurance broker for the state of Pennsylvania, licensed for auto, home, health, annuities and life.

Theodore treasured the times he had with his wife’s family, her parents, the extended Cast family, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two children, Theodore Edward Scardefield III and wife, Mary Ann, and Todd Anthony Scardefield, both of New Castle; and two grandchildren, Dylan Scardefield and Morgan Scardefield. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 3000 Wilmington Road. A procession will leave the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow for a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at noon in St. Vitus Church. The Rev. Father Frank Almade, pastor of St. Vitus Church, will officiate. Entombment will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
