John L. Martin
John Leroy Martin, age 88, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2015 at his home in Mechanicsburg. Born August 3, 1926 in Columbia, PA, he was a son of the late Wentz and Edna (McCullough) Martin.
John graduated in 1944 from the former Hershey Industrial School and was a lifetime member of the Milton Hersey School Alumni Association.
He was a mathematics teacher for 41 years at the Mechanicsburg Area School District. He was a member of the PIAA Central Penn Chapter of Track and Field Officials and was inducted into the West Shore Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame. For fifty years, he served as the Wildcat Football Scoreboard Operator.
He was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He was the widower of his beloved wife, Nancy (Peifer) Martin, to whom he was married for 63 years.
He is survived by three daughters, Christine M. Metcalfe and husband James of Mechanicsburg, Marianne L. Shaffer and husband Timothy of Dillsburg and Susan L. DiPaula and husband Steven of Columbia, MD; two grandsons, Kevin M. Shaffer and Philip J. DiPaula.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Verna M. Huber and Ethel A. Gast and brother Howard L. Martin.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Simpson and Filbert Streets, Mechanicsburg. There will be a viewing from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Malpezzi Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg and at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Thursday. Burial with military honors will be in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
