Passed: September 3, 2012

From: Joseph Culp [] Sent: Thursday, February 28, 2013 2:44 AM To: Gingrich, Sue Subject: John Cogswell Dear Marcia, My wife Lauren Culp forwarded your inquiry to me. I was a client and later a colleague of John Cogswell for many years. John passed away in early September of 2012. I do not know if his wife Felice published a formal obituary. I can put you in touch with her. Felice Karman

As you may know, John had a PhD in Psychology and had a psychotherapy practice in Los Angles for almost 40 years. He was semi-retired in the last decade, and lived in Santa Barbara with Felice. I was a close friend and colleague in John’s work with Walking-In-Your-Shoes (WIYS)- a body/mind technique we co-founded in the late 1980s. WIYS is widely used by many practitioners today and has impacted many lives in healing and beneficial ways. John published a paper about his work with this method in 1993 in the Journal of Humanistic Psychology. “Walking-In-Your-Shoes: Toward Integrating Sense of Self with Sense of Oneness”. John was a practicing Buddhist for many years. His skill as a therapist was profound, and he was treasured by many, many people over the years. I have attached the email I sent out at the time of his death. There are other photos of him which Felice may have. We plan on doing a memorial for John later this year. If I can help further, please let me know. Best wishes, Joseph Culp 310-408-8023

Dearest friends and family, It is with deep sorrow and great love that I must tell you that our good friend John Cogswell has passed away. He was in a care facility in Santa Barbara for the last year and is now at peace. HIs wife, Felice, is well and appreciates your good thoughts.

John was a great therapist, healer and friend to many of us. For me and my close colleagues, he was an important mentor and pro-genitor of Walking-In-Your-Shoes, a body/mind process that people use to see more deeply and empower their lives. I am proud and honored to have known this man, who personally gave me so many gifts and who invited me to help create WIYS, which has affected many lives in positive ways. All of us who have helped grow and expand WIYS over the years have received a great gift and owe John so very much.

John’s work and legacy continues here in the US and around the world. I have only just returned from a Walking-In-Your-Shoes Tour of Germany and Austria where the process is fully embraced and practiced daily. We will be planning a memorial in Los Angeles in the next few weeks and will let you all know the details should you wish to attend. In love and gratitude, Joseph
