Harold E. Gerber, 88, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016 at his home. He was the husband of the late Mary Lou Gerber and the late Reba Gerber.

Born in Aspers on August 20, 1927, Harold was the son of the late Luther Ralph and Nellie Grace (Smith) Gerber. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving at the end of WWII. He retired as a sales manager for Wiest Motor Company in 1979 when he opened a car lot, Gerber Auto Sales on South Richland Avenue, York.

Harold was a member of Prince AA, Viking AA, BD Social Club and Shiloh American Legion. He was an avid golfer who will be missed by his standing golf buddies. He had an infectious smile and a quick-witted sense of humor. Every stranger became a friend, and he was known as everyone’s special uncle. He made people feel loved. His children and their friends respect him as a father, upon which they model their own parenting.

A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2016 at the John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 2114 W. Market St., York, with the Rev. Bruce Bouchard and the Rev. Michael Bodnyk officiating. Viewings will be 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A flag folding presentation will be given by the York County Veterans Honor Guard prior to the service. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Mr. Gerber is survived by three children, Ronald E. Gerber and wife, Glenda, who was much more than a daughter-in-law to Harold, Rita E. Graberitz and Charles D. Gerber and friend, Teena Hoy; one stepson, Steve Brackett; five grandchildren, Amy Grondin, Dusti Fisher, Eddie Graberitz, Kyle Gerber and Madison Gerber; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Gerber; one sister, Ethel Crawford; nieces, nephews; longtime loving companion, Josephine Sindlinger and her extended family.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ed Graberitz, Sr.; two sisters, Marion Allison and Mildred Lightner; and two stepchildren, Brenda Morgan and Chuck Brackett.
