George A. Allen Sr., 85, of Lewistown, died on Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at Lewistown Hospital. He was born on Nov. 23, 1925, in Honey Grove, PA, the son of the late Furman A. Allen and Carrie (Neeley) Allen McCullough. George was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia R. “Ginny” Allen, on May 15, 2003. They had shared 56 years of marriage. In addition to his parents and wife, George was also preceded in death by four brothers, four sisters and a grandson, Brett Allen Konnick. He is survived by his children: Joy Allen Konnick of Pottstown, Marlin Allen of Lewistown, Cardie Melnick of Pottstown, Michele Weigner of Pottstown and George A. Allen Jr. of Lewistown, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many ‘wanna-be’ grandchildren.

From the age of seven until his graduation in 1943, George attended Milton Hershey School and would reflect on his Hershey experience until his death. He influenced the lives of many of his Hershey brothers and sisters throughout the years.

George was a master technician in the plumbing and heating industry, employed by Boyertown Oil Co. and Snedeker Oil Co. After retirement, he worked a “summer job” in maintenance in Dewey Beach, Del. at the Marina Suites Hotel and Marina.

George was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served from 1943 through 1946. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

George was loved by the staff and residents of O’Hesson Manor where he was a dedicated volunteer for 17 years logging more than 800 hours of service. He could be seen through the years at Indian Valley basketball games. George shared a love of life and always gave something much larger than himself.

A memorial service will be held on Mon. Aug. 15, at 11 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church, 384 S. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Kari Swigart officiating. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
