Edward H. Scheller
Edward H. Scheller, 70, of Allentown, died Sunday, September 7, 2008 following a massive cerebral stroke. He was the husband of Eleanor L. Ellie (Moyer) Scheller, to whom he was married 47 years last April. Born November 17, 1937 in Allentown, he was the son of the late Thomas and Caroline Scheller (Updegrove) Scheller. He lived most of his life in Allentown. Ed grew up in Allentown, then attended the Milton Hershey School from age 12 until graduation in 1955. A member of the PAARNG, Bethlehem unit, for 10 years, he lived his working life in Allentown. He worked 30 years in the Bethlehem Steel Printery, then eight years as the East Coast Field Representative for Young American Bowling Alliance. He worked at Boulevard Bowling Center, Jordan Lanes, and as youth coordinator of Parkway Lanes until his passing. He wrote the Allentown area bowling reports for the Morning Call for 11 years, and was published in national bowling magazines. Edwards personal life was dedicated to his love of bowling, as both a bowler and a youth coach. He was a founding member of the Allentown Area Mens Bowling Association and the Allentown Area Junior Bowling Association, and the Pennsylvania State Junior Bowling Association. He was also secretary of the Allentown Clubmens and Fairview Mens leagues. Ed began coaching youth bowlers at age 18 and continued until the day of his death. He was head coach of youth bowling leagues at Boulevard, Jordan, and AMF Parkway Lanes. He was a Silver Medal coach with Y.A.B.A. and U.S.B.C. Certified Coach Instructor, and trained more than 20,000 coaches around the United States, many still working with youth bowlers. He was the founder of the Lehigh Valley Junior Masters Tournament and a founding member of the PA State Youth Bowling Championships. In 2000, he received the David Dahms Young American Bowlers Alliance Coach of the Year, recognized for his years as a coach and coach instructor.
Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; brothers, Albert of Clarksville, Tenn. and Thomas of Hershey; sisters, Barbara Edwards and Margaret Smith of Allentown and Cathy Reidel of Port Murray, N.J.; daughter, Melanie Scheller of Allentown; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Hope Scheller of Washington, D.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Kim Scheller of Whitehall; grandchildren, Michael, Thomas, Katelyn, Calvin, Alison, Judson. Ed was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Long, Minnie Zimmerman and Bernice Askins.
Services: memorial, 11 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2008 in St. Josephs Lutheran Church, 41 S. Carlisle St., Allentown. No calling hours. This will be followed by a wake at the Italian-American Bocce Club, 273 E. Elm St., Allentown. Arrangements by Trexler Funeral Home Inc., Allentown.
