Charles D. Gormley
Charles D. Gormley Jr., 96, of Boynton Beach, Fl., began his heavenly journey on June 5, 2016. He passed into eternity at home which was his request.
Born May 5, 1920, in Lancaster, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles Sr. and Elizabeth (Abele) Gormley. Mr. Gormley was a member of the former Memorial Presbyterian Church on South Queen Street and was active in the youth group, played the piano, and sang in the choir. Charles graduated from the Hershey Industrial School (Milton Hershey School) in 1938. He credits his education and training there for his success throughout his life. He stated many times that he was fortunate to have this opportunity after his father died.
Charles entered the U.S. Army during World War II and achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. He was assigned to the Aleutian Islands with Top Secret clearance. He received the Alaskan Department Certificate of Commendable Service commendation for his work and was respected by his commanding officers.
He relocated to Miami, Fl., in 1950 and was a distributor for Vitaminerals, Inc., was co-owner of the Record Mart in Coral Gables, Fl., and Assistant Project Director for Business for the Dade County War on Poverty. Charles relocated to California in 1968 and was the Controller for California Rural Legal Assistance in San Francisco. He returned to Florida in 1978 and was the Controller for Gulf Coast Legal Assistance until he retired in 1988.
Mr. Gormley was a lifelong bachelor and beloved uncle. He is survived by his niece Katherine E., wife of David Heck, Miami, FL, nephews James C., husband of Jennifer Martin, Lititz, Pa., Timothy D., husband of Ginger Martin, Tallahassee, Fl., and Peter R., husband of Susan Martin, Miami, Fl., as well as 5 great-nieces, 4 great-nephews, and 1 great-great niece. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Gormley Martin.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mr. William Adams for his care and companionship for Charles until his death.
Charles was cremated and his remains scattered in the Atlantic Ocean that he enjoyed so much. His wish was to have his ashes travel the seas. No service will be held. He requested that donations be sent to the Milton Hershey School, P.O. Box 830, Hershey, Pa., 17033-0830, in his memory. The Neptune Society assisted the family with arrangements.
