Richard D. Scheiwe

Richard D. Scheiwe ’45, 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Maidencreek Place. He was the husband of the late Mabel Scheiwe.

Richard D. Scheiwe, age 94, formerly of Bowers, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 in Maidencreek Place, where he was a resident for the past three years. He was the widower of Mabel E. “Dolly” Scheiwe, who died August 8, 2012. Born in Spring Valley, Muhlenberg Township, PA, Richard was the son of the late Joseph A. and Kathryn (Klopp) Scheiwe, and later on, Calista Mathias.

He was a graduate of the Hershey Industrial School and served in The United States Navy during World War II. Richard was employed by the former Caloric Corporation, Topton for 19 years, and then at Atlas Minerals and Chemicals, Inc., Mertztown, for 23 years until his retirement in 1989. He also helped to operate The Bowers Hotel for a number of years.

During his life, when he was still able, Richard enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing golf, and bowling with friends. He was one of the 12 members who organized Bow Top Hunting Camp, Lycoming County. He was a member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bowers, where he served several terms on the church council. He also was a member of the board of The Union Cemetery of Bowers for over 50 years. Richard was a charter member of the former Bowers Lions Club and served two terms as President and 15 years as Secretary. He was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship and Distinguished Service awards. He was also a member of Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton.

Richard is survived by his three daughters, Diane C. (Scheiwe) Ohlinger, Ruscombmanor Twp., Susan K. (Scheiwe), wife of Paul H. Schick, New Smithville, and Linda L. (Scheiwe) wife of Thomas M. Bloom, Spencer, NY; six grandchildren, Jennifer L. (Ohlinger), wife of Jason D. Trumbauer, Jill M. (Schick), wife of Drew Hockenbroch, Joseph P., husband of Jenny L. (Lenhart) Schick, Lara K. (Schick), wife of Jason Toner, Sarah L. Bloom and Matthew T., husband of Tanya (Ayzikovich) Bloom; and 15 great grandchildren, Dylan, Devon, Shane, Gavin, Gabriel, Elliana, Logan, Matthias, Brianna, Talitha, Elias, Immanuel, Lucas, Collin and Alice.  

A funeral service to celebrate and honor Richard’s life will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. in Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, 550 Fleetwood Road, Bowers, with The Reverend Martin Milne, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the church. Burial will be held privately by the family in Union Cemetery of Bowers.
