Alton “Al” L. Kauffman

Alton L. Kauffman ’48, 93, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at SpiriTrust Lutheran’s Memory Care Program. He was the husband of the late Audree Kauffman and the father of David Kauffman.

Alton Leroy Kauffman, age 93, born May 17, 1930, passed away at SpiriTrust Lutheran’s Memory Care Program, on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

Alton married to Audree M. (Poff) Kauffman on December 24, 1954, at Christ Lutheran Church in York. Together they had one child, David P. Kauffman who’s married to Margaret N. (Callenberger) who both reside in West York, Pennsylvania. Audree preceded Al in death on October 31, 2011.

Alton was born to Harry and Mable Kauffman of Newport, Pennsylvania along with one sister Gloria Rummel of Watsontown, Pennsylvania. His parents and sister preceded him in death.

Upon Alton’s parents passing away at an early age both he and his sister were separated, and he was accepted into Hershey Industrial School for boys in 1941. There he lived and worked on the Hershey Farms doing chores both morning and nights after school. Al graduated from Hershey with the class of 1948 and this year would be his 75th class reunion.

In 1950 Alton joined the United States Marines Corps where he served in the Korean War for nearly four years as a Sargent noted to receive the Korean Service Medal with one star. Upon discharge he came to York, Pennsylvania. Alton worked at Lyon Metal Company for over 27 years. Then he began at Precision Components and then Pfaltzgraff.

Alton truly enjoyed sports from baseball, football, and basketball. But a large portion of his heart enjoyed being included in at least three golf leagues in York. Besides these interests Al had a special affection for family and helping his son David in maintaining the upkeep of David’s retail stores, The Red Caboose Craft and Gift, with two locations in Red Lion and York. Al also had a very strong love for church and volunteered in many functions.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 AM Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Christ Lutheran Church, 29 South George Street, York, his Pastor The Rev. Dr. Alan J. Watt, officiating. Viewings will be 4-6:00 PM Friday Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, inc., 863 South George Street, York, and 9:30-10:30 Saturday at the Church. Burial will be in Dallastown Union Cemetery, with military rites presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church, 29 South George Street, York 17401 or to Milton Hershey School, 1201 Homestead Lane, Hershey, PA 17033.
