Theodore D. Grove
Theodore D. ‘Lefty’ Grove, 85, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011, at the home of his son David Grove, York. He was the husband of Margaret Faye (Shank) Grove, with whom he celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on September 28, 2010.
Mr. Grove was born in Mt. Union, on July 4, 1925, son of the late William I. and Edna (Cramer) Grove. Lefty was employed by Mrs. Smith’s Pie Co. as a sales supervisor, from which he retired in 1988.
He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Culebra Island as a Petty Officer. Lefty was a member of Shiloh United Church of Christ, it’s mixed adult Sunday School class and served as a Deacon and an Elder on the church consistory. In addition, he served as president of the Shiloh Cemetery Assoc., for many years.
Memberships include National American Legion Assoc., and a life member of the Viking Athletic Assoc. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen in York.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, David W. Grove and his wife, Rhonda of York; six grandchildren, Toni and her fiance, John Perry, Tai, Ashlyn, Landyn, Ted, all of York, and Andrew, presently serving in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan; one great-granddaughter, Aleigha. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wedell I. Grove and Alfred William Grove.
Funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. from Shiloh United Church of Christ, 2251 Willow Rd., York. Officiating will be his pastor, the Rev. David D. Danneberger. Final resting place will be in Shiloh Cemetery with full military honors by the York County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh United Church of Christ, 2251 Willow Rd., York, PA 17408; or to Heartland Hospice, 3417 Concord Rd., York, PA 17402.
