Passed: March 5, 2013

An inmate in the Dauphin County prison has died. 31-year-old, Monique Mason died this morning. She was hospitalized Saturday after she was found unresponsive. Mason was in prison for aggravated assault, possession of a firearm and other charges. She also had a county parole detainer for drugs. The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office and Criminal Investigation Division are conducting a joint investigation to determine the cause of death. An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

Update 3/7/12 A Dauphin County Prison inmate had a “medical event” at the prison before she was taken to Harrisburg Hospital, where she died early Tuesday, Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick said.

Monique Mason, 31, of Harrisburg was on a cot in an open area at the prison when she collapsed and fell slowly to the floor, Hetrick said. She was taken to the hospital over the weekend, according to her family. Mason had been in the prison since November 2011. She was awaiting trial on charges including aggravated assault, conspiracy, recklessly endangerment and illegally possessing a gun.

The coroner’s officer did an autopsy. Because she was an organ donor, authorities can’t fully examine her organs that have been transplanted, Hetrick said. Officials may not be able to pinpoint exactly what occurred due to the organ donation, but she did suffer a “clinical event.” There were no signs of trauma, Hetrick said.

“It was meaningful for the family that, that she could be a donor,” Hetrick said. “On the other hand, we have now only a partial autopsy, but we are looking at specific problems in different areas to explain what her medical condition was at the time.”
