MHS is offering an Apprenticeship Boot Camp for recent grads from the Classes of 2016 to 2021 and Seniors in the Class of 2022 to explore careers in the construction trades.
When: Aug. 2-6, 2021, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Where: Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Keystone Training Facility, Manheim, PA
- There will be no charge for those selected to participate
- Application and interview required; space is limited
The MHS Apprenticeship Boot Camp will provide a weeklong opportunity for Milton Hershey School alumni to explore careers in construction through hands-on work, education, and mentoring from industry professionals. During this five-day immersive experience at the ABC Keystone Training Facility in Manheim, Pennsylvania, participants will develop foundational and occupational skills and build take-home projects they help design while learning about careers that begin with apprenticeship.
At ABC Keystone, attendees will learn basic safety rules, discuss design as a crucial element of construction, and review the construction process. They will learn how to use hand tools and power tools; they will pull wire and wire plugs, switches, and lights; they will solder and weld; and they will utilize their newly gained knowledge to build their very own take-home projects incorporating HVAC, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trade skills. During daily Toolbox Talks, instructors will review the day’s projects and safety considerations.
Field trips with local contractors are scheduled throughout the week to ensure participants see different phases of a construction project in process.
Participants will meet at the ABC Keystone training facility in Manheim each morning between 7:30 and 8 a.m. and are expected to dress appropriately for a construction job site (long pants, shirts, and boots; no tank tops, sneakers, or flip flops will be permitted). All participants will be provided with personal protective equipment in the form of a hardhat, safety glasses, earplugs, and a safety vest, which they are expected to bring with them daily. Personal protective equipment must be worn while in the shop. Unsafe behavior will not be tolerated and may result in a participant being asked to leave. Participants are expected to bring a writing utensil and paper. All other training materials will be provided.
The day will conclude at 4 p.m. A schedule will be provided that outlines each day’s events. Please note that job site field trip locations will be determined later, but they are anticipated to be within Lancaster and adjacent counties. Participants are expected to provide their own transportation to ABC Keystone, to any job sites, and to any special events hosted by MHS.
Currently enrolled high school seniors will be transported from MHS to the event daily. Alumni participants will stay in a hotel local to ABC Keystone. Hotel room expenses will be paid by MHS Graduate Programs for Success. Breakfast will be provided in the hotel. Lunch will be provided at ABC Keystone. Dinner will be provided by MHS each day.
Applicants will be expected to provide references and participate in an interview and will need to commit to the full five-day event. Participants who are selected will be notified by June 30, 2021.
